5 Alternatives to One-Use Sandwich Bags

It happened tonight. I opened the drawer, grabbed the box, and pulled out THE LAST SANDWICH BAG. I should put this on the shopping list for tomorrow but I just can’t bring myself to buy any more. Maybe it’s the news report I read a few days ago that is still bothering me, or maybe it’s the prospect that I may be responsible for screwing up the ecosystem for my non-existent grandchildren, and yes I have been known to overthink, but I just can’t bring myself to purposely buy any more single-use plastic.

Plastic sandwich bag

On any given week day, I would estimate that our household uses about 5 sandwich bags per day x 5 days x 4 weeks/month = 100 bags. Really, this does not seem like alot – maybe that’s just one box per month which costs us about $2 but over the course of a few decades that adds up to a lot of trash and cash!

It’s not really the money though. When I think that we only use that piece of plastic for a few hours at most, it then goes in the garbage, and then travels to a landfill to live forever it kinda makes me sick and a bit sad.

Yes, sandwich bags are convenient but I know I can do better than this.

Thinking Outside of the (Sandwich) Bag

There are plenty of reusable options for packing lunches and I am committed to trying at least one of these to eliminate sandwich bags from my shopping list.

  1. Reusable BPA-free plastic containers – my preference
  2. Laminated fabric pouches – really cute and it makes me laugh to think of hubby taking his sandwich out on the job site!
  3. Beeswax wrappers – same comment as above!
  4. Silicone sandwich bags like Stasher bags – might be worth a try
  5. Trendy Bento type boxes – might work for the adults but a bit pricey to risk getting lost if you have kiddos

Every big change starts with just one small step. Sandwich bags today… tomorrow who knows?

Leave a comment below to let me know what you use to pack lunches!
